MODE OF REPRODUCTION IN FUNGI (PART-2) Asexual Reproduction
1. Asexual Reproduction
The reproduction by spores, is called asexual reproduction. The spores are minute cells that serve as reproductive propagules. Spore production is the most common method of reproduction in fungi.
There are four types of asexual spores. They are:
1. Conidia
2. Sporangiospores (Endospores)
3. Chlamydospores
4. Arthospores
1. Conidia (singular-Conidium)
a. Conidium is a spore formed freely at the tip or side of hypha.
b. Specialized hyphae having such spores are called conidiophores.
c. The tip of conidiophore swells out and produces a spe-cial cell called sterigma (Plural., Sterigmata).
d. The tip of sterigmata cuts off rounded cells called conidia one by one.
e. The conidia germinate and give rise to new mycelia
2. Sporangiospore
a. Sporangiospore or endospore is a spore formed within a sporangium (plural.,sporangia).
b. A sporangium is a sac-like structure within which asexual spores are produced Specialized hyphae having such sporangia are called sporangiophores.
c. The sporangiospores may be motile or non-motile.
d. Motile spores are flagellated and are called zoospores.
e. Non-motile spores may be called aplanospores.
f. At maturity the sporangium bursts and releases sporangiospores.
g. The sporangiospores are resistant to adverse environmental conditions.
h. During the favourable season these spores give rise to new mycelia.
3. Chlamydospore
a.Chlamydospore is a thick walled resistant spore.
b. It is produced under unfavourable con-ditions.
c. It is highly resistant to adverse environmental conditions.
d. It contains a lot of reserve food So it can remain viable for long periods.
e. During the favourable condition, they form new mycelia
4. Arthrospore
a.Oidium Or Arthrospore is a spore resulting from the fragmentation of a hypha.
b. The hypha breaks up into many bits.
c. Each bit behaves like a spore.
d. Oidia are produced under favourable conditions.
e. They are not resistant to adverse condition.
f. The arthrospores are usually brightly coloured.
